Being warm, funny and witty combined with exceptional artistic talent make Master Signature artist William Whitaker the ideal choice for this year's Distinguished Artist. The only son of an artist father, William Whitaker grew up in the special world of the working artist. He had access to the finest art materials and was painting in watercolor and oil by the age of six. "Nature of Oil Painting - Environmental Health and Safe Studio Practices" with Scott Gellatly Location: Casa Monica Hotel
For 600 years, oil painting has been the preeminent medium of visual expression. There is nothing more natural or enduring than oil painting. No other painting media holds the same raw power of communication, pigment load and artistic possibility. Painters today are interested in knowing where their materials are from and in making the right choices for their work, their own well-being and the environment.
The landscape of oil painting changed significantly during the 20th century. Painters' color palettes were expanded with the development of modern organic pigments, and the oil painting process has become safer, primarily through our work to develop contemporary mediums, solvents and varnishes. Still, artists today are moving toward water-based painting media because of assumed attitudes and misconceptions in regards to personal and environmental safety.
This presentation explores the nature of oil painting - from the field to the palette - in order to create permanent paintings while at the same time protecting ourselves and the environment.
Saturday May 2, 2015 3:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Louis' many talents include experimenting with composition, design and seeing today's life and objects from a philosophical point of view filled with humor and beauty. Whether it is people walking down the street, a kitchen sink, or the window of a retail store, his work has imagination, color and insight of all that he sees and feels. Louis is always striving to master his use of color, tone and texture.
