Juror of Awards: Howard Friedland OPA
OPA was pleased to announce that the Eastern Regional Exhibition was hosted by Anderson Fine Art Gallery, located in St. Simons Island, Georgia, from November 17 through December 16, 2017. Anderson Fine Art Gallery hosted an opening reception and awards ceremony on Friday, November 17, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for artists, friends, press and the public with the awards presentation at 7:30 p.m. Associate and Signature member entries canvas size may not exceed 480 square inches. OPA was pleased to have Signature artist Howard Friedland serve as this year's Juror of Awards
One of four islands that comprise the Golden Isles of Georgia, St. Simons Island was a lovely vacation spot and inviting location to paint, boasting beautiful beaches, Southern Oaks, draped with Spanish moss, antebellum plantations, Fort Frederica National Monument and the St. Simons Island Lighthouse.
Schedule of Events
Wednesday, November 15
St. Simons Island and the surrounding Golden Isles were the perfect location for artists. There was a two-day competition that began on Wednesday afternoon and ended on Friday afternoon.
All paintings must have been framed and wired for hanging to be in the competition & sale. Eligible attendees* were guaranteed one painting in the exhibition; however, two or more paintings were considered based on the number of registered attendees.
*Please Note: The plein air competition & sale was open to OPA members only. Non OPA artists may have applied for membership onsite in order to participate.1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Registration Packet Pick-Up

Pre-registered attendees may have picked up their registration materials and have had their canvas stamped at this time. Artists who had not pre-registered may have also registered at this time. Don't forget!
- An OPA or Anderson Gallery representative must have officially stamped canvas prior to painting
- Maximum canvas size may not have exceeded 320 square inches.
- Paintings must have been framed and wired for hanging in order to be in the competition & sale.
- Only OPA artists who had paid the registration fee
were eligible to participate in the plein air
competition & sale.
- Non-OPA members may have registered to attend all events, but were not be eligible to participate in the competition & sale
- Painting locations were available when you picked up your registration packet.
Thursday, November 16
Registration Packet Pick-Up Location: Anderson Fine Art Gallery @ OPA Tent
Artists that were unable to arrive on Wednesday could have picked up their registration packets and had their canvas stamped anytime on Thursday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.6:00 p.m.
Artists' Dinner at Georgia Sea Grill Location: 407 Mallery Street, St. Simons Island
Cost: $$$ - Attire: Island Casual
Reservations had been made at one of the finest seafood restaurants on St. Simons Island. Reservations were on a first-come, first-served basis. Individual checks were issued. Space was limited to the first 25 individuals.

Painting Demonstration with Marc Hanson OPAM Location: On location - TBD
Marc began college as a biology major, but soon applied to and was accepted into Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, majoring in illustration. After Art Center and a brief stint as a staff illustrator in Sacramento, California, Marc moved to Minnesota where he lived for 33 years while raising a family and pursuing his art.
Marc teaches landscape painting workshops in many locations
nationally. "I love working with other painters in t
heir pursuit to better their craft. My goal is not to have
them assimilate my style and technique, but to teach them how
to more closely examine the subject and apply the principles
that representational painters
must follow to become effective visual communicators."

Framed and wired paintings must have been turned in to Anderson Fine Art Gallery between the hours of 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. to have been eligible for the competition.6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Thank you for joining us for an evening of fun and celebration as we took in the beautiful paintings that comprise this year's Eastern Regional Exhibition. As always, we expected this exhibition to be of the highest caliber. Awards were announced at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Painting Demonstration with Howard Friedland OPA Location: Anderson Fine Art Gallery at Artists Annex Gallery
OPA Signature artist Howard Friedland currently resides in Bozeman, Montana with his wife artist Susan Blackwood OPA. He studied fine art and commercial art at New York's High School of Music and Art and went to college at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Art and Science in the department of Art and Architecture in New York's Greenwich Village. Howard has studied painting with Ned Jacob, Michael J. Lynch, Mark Daley, Laura Robb, William Schultz, Robert Kuester, Charles Reed, Carolyn Anderson, Mitch Billis, Scott Christensen and most recently with Matt Smith.
He has been featured in many art publications including American Artist Magazine, International Artist Magazine, Plein Air Magazine and Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine. He has painted, taught and exhibited extensively in New Mexico, Colorado, Montana, Arizona, Florida, Mexico, France, Italy, England, Spain, Portugal, Croatia and China. His work has won numerous awards including the prestigious Gold Medal Award at OPA's National Exhibition in 2008.11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Painting Demonstration with Katie Dobson Cundiff OPA Location: TBD
Katie Cundiff OPA acquired an early appreciation for the fine arts, drawing, and painting, under the tutelage of artist parents. Early works resulted in scholarships from National Scholastics Magazine and the Croatian Fraternal Union, earning a B.A. in Fine Arts and Painting from Ringling College of Art and Design. A love of the out of doors combined with painting has produced numerous awards and recognition in plein air events. Her work also includes still life, figurative, and wildlife, and has been featured on apparel and print for Ducks Unlimited, National Wild Turkey Federation, Quail Unlimited, The Billfish Foundation, Safari Clubs International, and Gulf Coast Conservation Association.
In addition, Cundiff has been featured in American Art Collector Magazine, American Artists Magazine, Southwest Art, and at the Museum of Florida Art and Culture in Sebring, Florida. Juried exhibits and awards include those from Oil Painters of America, American Women Artists, Women Painters of the Southeast, Cumberland Society of Oil Painters, and American Impressionists.5:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.
Plein Air Competition Award Reception Location: Anderson Fine Art Gallery
6:30 p.m. Artists' Dinner at Sea Palms Resort Location: Sea Palms Resort, 5445 Frederica Road, St. Simons Island, GA Cost: $40 (includes tax and gratuity)
Time to sit back and relax with fellow artists and friends and enjoy a wonderful dinner at the lovely Sea Palms Resort. Guests had the option to select from one of three entrees: southern grilled pork loin with whipped sweet potatoes, cheese/herbs stuffed chicken breast with roasted potatoes, or chef's fish in a beurre blanc, and basmati rice. All entrees included salad, freshly baked bread, iced tea/coffee and chocolate cake for dessert.

John Michael Carter OPAM first began his studies in drawing at the age of 15 with his father E.L.Carter, a commercial artist. He attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago and then moved to Los Angeles where he attended the prestigious Art Center College of Design. There he received a background in the major classical schools of painting and graduated with a B.F.A, Degree. In addition to Carter's love of figurative painting, he enjoys the street scenes and landscapes he discovers in his travels here and abroad.
He has been a frequent guest instructor at art workshops across the country, including the Scottsdale Artist School since 1990, the Dallas Arts League and the Cincinnati Art Club. His thorough classical training and experience in drawing and painting gives him the technical expertise to provide artists with superb instruction. He is a Master Signature member of the Oil Painters of America and was OPA's National Exhibition Gold Medal recipient in 2004. He currently serves as OPA's president.
