The Red Barn, by Albert Handell, oil 24x36
I have received a number of phone calls and emails asking me to clarify my oil palette not just with colors but the colors and the brands.
Though I do experiment a lot, my initial palette and brand from the very beginning was and basically still is Winsor Newton (WN)… beware I am not referring to their student grade which can be confusing, for the student grade is named Winton Newton. I don’t use them!
All the following colors are WN except otherwise noted:
Titanium White
Cadmium Yellow Light
Cadmium Yellow Medium
Cadmium Orange
Cadmium Red Light
Alizarin Crimson Permanent
Vandyke Brown
Naples Yellow
Burnt Sienna
Serves Blue (Rembrandt)
Cobalt Blue
Ultramarine Blue
Veridian
Sap Green
Ivory Black
I like to paint large oils in the studio, I find there is lots of mixing, and a lot of the tones I mix are middle tones, and I find having these already mixed middle tones on my palette a help.
