Description - "The world doesn't need another pretty picture, what it sorely needs is a creative concept", one of Patrick's favorite quotes. If you have been looking to amp up the creativity and originality in your paintings, this is the workshop for you. Patrick has developed a way of painting that takes the form of your subject matter and improves upon it with unexpected creative turns. This often leads to strong elements of abstraction and suggestion in his work, rather than explicit detail. Even if you prefer a more traditional style of painting, you will still find unique ways to improve them in this workshop. Patrick's knowledge of all styles of painting and artwork will keep you entertained throughout the day, his lighthearted humility will encourage you to step outside of your comfort zone and try innovative new techniques to improve your paintings. This workshop will focus on a process of taking your paintings to a new level by helping you clarify a vision and purpose for your work and asking questions during the process such as: What is it about this subject matter that makes me want to paint it? What qualities do I want the painting to have to develop your initial intent? What feelings do I want the final piece to convey? Learning to ask yourself these questions as you paint will lead you to a unique and personal take on your subject matter. Along with defining your purpose, you'll also learn to edit, simplify, exaggerate, manipulate the paint and refine your edge work. Each day will start with a demo from start to finish in the morning, and students will paint individually with Patrick's assistance each afternoon. Students can bring their own photo reference or use Patrick's photos. TOPICS COVERED Value and its use in design and pattern Use of the Notan - a Japanese design concept involving the play and placement of light and dark elements as they are placed next to the other in the composition of art and imagery Solid drawing and values as a basis for "looseness" Simplifying your subject matter Subjective color and how your retina relates to color
