Description - A common misconception about plein air is that such paintings are always finished in a single session. But did you know that many award-winning plein air paintings are done in multiple sessions? Some of my best paintings were started in the field and finished in the studio. It happened on more than one occasion. I'd start a painting on location, the weather would change, or something would come up, and I would have to leave. I've finished those paintings in the studio. It turns out that studio finishes are often stronger because they afford more time to think about further developing the painting. With experience, I realized the wisdom of getting a solid start, that captures the essentials, then moving on. In this workshop we'll spend the first day in the field doing starts and studies. On days two and three we'll build upon our field work. We'll do that by finishing a painting started in the field or starting a new paining based on field studies. It's a great way to work that takes advantage of the best of both worlds. Emphasis will be placed on establishing good structure, design, and color relationships. Added emphasis will be placed on further developing those elements captured in the field with an eye towards coming away with a great painting. Artist/Instructor Robert J. Simone says "the most closely held secret in painting is that there are no secrets!" Simone says that great painting flows from mastering the basics. He has been described as very passionate, extremely knowledgeable, patient and kind. He can meet you where you are and give you the information most critical to your growth. His teaching style is a stream of consciousness approach that draws on his vast studies and experience. Although highly focused, his is very lighthearted and fun loving. His workshops are joyful, deep dives into the depths of painting.
