The Gilded Oil Portrait

Description - Description: 2-Day Workshop Date/Time: August 24th and 31st, 2024 10 AM-3:30 AM In this workshop, portrait artist Nicole Troup will help students explore gilding and acrylics together. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn how to paint portraits in acrylic, especially if they have found this medium to be difficult to work with due to the rapid drying time. Troup will introduce a special acrylic brand, “Golden Open Acrylics,” which has a slower drying time to facilitate wet-on-wet blending techniques. “Golden Open Acrylics” are the closest to working with oils that you can achieve with acrylics. The workshop will span over two Saturdays, allowing students to work on their paintings in between classes. There will be some instruction on drawing and facial proportions. Still, most of the class will focus on how to incorporate synthetic gold leaf gilding practices into your painting, painting techniques in acrylic, mixing and blending skin tones, looking for correct value relationships and creating form. Students will be given a completed drawing or reference provided by the instructor to transfer to the canvas so that they have more time to concentrate on painting techniques and gilding. Throughout the workshop, Troup will give demonstrations and critiques. About the artist: Nicole Troup of Greencastle, Pennsylvania, works as a commissioned portrait artist. A few of her clients include the VFW, doctors, CEOs, WWE wrestler Titus O’Neil, and local clients. She has also painted former Pennsylvania Governor Thomas Corbett. She is an Ambassador for the Portrait Society of America and also a member of the Oil Painters of America and Portrait Society of Atlanta. Troup’s work has been featured in National and International magazines and journals, including the American Art Collector, Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine, The Guide Artists Magazine, and the Journal of the Portrait Society of America. Palette Any size from 9”x12”- 16”x20” (any palette or palette paper. Store palette in a container to keep acrylics wet longer) Support 11”x14” canvas (make sure your support has texture to it. Easier to blend skin tones) Proportion and Scale Tools 10” Proportional Scale Divider tool ( any brand) Misc Materials paper towels/rags, palette knife, rinsing container, pencil and eraser easel Small bottle of hand sanitizer ( dries brushes quickly after cleaning them) 2 Sheets of 11×14 wax paper 1 sheet of 11×14 carbon transfer paper 1-2 sheets of canvas paper ( to practice painting techniques) Masking tape or painters tape (any brands) Metal Leaf (Metal leaf supplies can be purchased at AC-Moore, Hobby Lobby or Michaels) Gold metal leaf booklet with multiple foil sheets ( Any brand.
